University of St Andrews Karate Club

Our head instructor, Shihan Paul Dempsey (instructor of instructors), is a 7th Dan Karate Union Scotland North (KUSN) chief instructor and grading examiner. He started training karate in 1965/66, and founded the university club 40 years ago. Our two following instructors, Sensei John Shields (6th Dan) and Sensei Bruce Farquharson (4th Dan), are together with Shihan Paul Dempsey assisted in instruction by Sensei Tom Jones (3rd Dan) and Sensei Allan Copland (2nd Dan). Our sessions are usually accompanied by at least two instructors, allowing the potential split of the class into beginner and intermediate/advanced. This ensures students are catered to and given sufficient attention no matter their skill level.
