KARATE: An introduction

Karate is a defensive martial art originating from Japan. Our club trains in the Shotokan style, one of the oldest and most popular in the world. Shotokan karate is a traditional and powerful style based on kicks, blocks, stances, and strong, effective punches. There are three major parts of karate:

KIHON

Kihon focuses on basic techniques and movements and the repetition of these to build correct execution and encourage muscle memory.

KATA

Kata focuses on form; it is a choreographed set of movements that essentially represents a fight between the practitioner and one or several invisible opponents. Each grade is accompanied by a new kata.

KUMITE

Kumite focuses on sparring. This can range from choreographed and basic to freestyle and many-layered. The kumite performed tends to become more freestyle as one advances in grades.
